Lots of audience in Sochi: 'Still, everything was safe'

It was an old-fashioned busy weekend at the Sochi Autodrom. No less than 30,000 visitors per day were welcomed, despite the global coronavirus pandemic still on going.

There were concerns beforehand as to whether this race with an audience would be safe enough. Would everyone play by the rules well enough? Isn't it too busy? It wasn't the first race with an audience this season. At Mugello there were already 3000 spectators admitted, but in Russia there were ten times as many.

Nothing to worry about

However, this did not worry Daniil Kvyat. "Everyone involved in this idea has given it a lot of thought. All Covid measures apply to everyone. I assume I can race carefree," the Russian said to GPfans beforehand. It looks like the AlphaTauri driver was right. There were no significant incidents, as far as we know.

So the Russians have shown that it is possible to organise a Grand Prix while respecting the coronavirus measures. It will become clear in the next few weeks whether it was really all as safe as it is now being discussed.
