Hamilton cares little about new FIA rules: 'Nothing changes for me'

From this season, Formula 1 drivers must apply in writing to the FIA to make a political statement. At Mercedes' press conference, which GPblog attended, Lewis Hamilton stated that he has no intention of complying, however.

The Brit is known for frequently speaking out about social and political issues, in recent years. If it is up to the seven-time World Champion, he will keep this up in the coming years, even though a punishment may be hanging over his head.

"It doesn't surprise me, but nothing will stop me from speaking on the things that I'm passionate about," Hamilton made clear. "This sport does have a responsibility still to speak out and create awareness on important topics particularly as we travel to all these different places. Nothing changes for me."

Hamilton hopes the FIA will give him freedom. "It would be silly to say I would want to take penalty points for speaking out on things. But I will still be speaking my mind. We have this platform, still a lot of things we need to tackle."

Possible longer stay at Mercedes for Hamilton

The driver still has a contract that runs until the end of the year, but Hamilton revealed earlier in the day that he intends to extend it. Initial talks between the two parties have now begun.
