Yesterday was a hugely successful day for English sport, and Lewis Hamilton says he is proud to have been apart of such a memorable day for the country. He won the French Grand Prix for the first time ever.

England’s football team destroyed Panama 6-1 in the World Cup meaning they have qualified for the knockout stages with a game to spare. Meanwhile, the England cricket team played their part beating Australia to win the series 5-0. England rugby got their first win against South Africa for 18 years a day earlier.

Hamilton, born in Stevenage, was watching the World Cup match before the start of the race at the Paul Ricard Circuit.

"It's a great day for England," Hamilton told Sky Sports. "Everyone was watching and when l left the garage l saw it was 6-0 and l was like 'that is fricking awesome’.

"It's a great day for the UK, and I hope that I've contributed in a positive way to that.”

Having been given a new spec engine for the race, Hamilton went on to thank all the staff back at home for preparing his car to allow an important gain on title rival Sebastian Vettel.

"It's been such a great weekend, and l want the guys back at Brixworth to know how grateful l am. It's been incredible teamwork,” Hamilton added.
