Vandoorne not thinking about series switch

Despite McLaren looking to expand into IndyCar and seeing his team mate Fernando Alonso participate in endurance racing this year, Stoffel Vandoorne is fully focussed on Formula One, and not thinking about a potential switch.

Vandoorne has scored only eight points this season, compared to Alonso’s 32, but the Belgian still believes he is a good fit for McLaren.

He says that Alonso’s experience has put him in a good position to try new series, whilst his relative inexperience means he should concentrate on F1 and McLaren.

“Fernando’s had a very long career in Formula One, and I think because of his success and results, a lot of doors have opened,” he said.

“For me the main focus now is Formula One and to try and have a successful career here.”

Vandoorne is aware of McLaren’s other motorsport adventures, and whilst he admits it is exciting, he does not want to get involved.

Vandoorne added: “I’m a massive racing fan, and I obviously follow everything that is going on, everything that Fernando has been doing in Indy and Le Mans, everything that McLaren has on their projects.

“But my main focus really for the near future is F1, and I’m not looking at anywhere else at the moment.

“I think Fernando and myself, we’re in very different stages of our career.”
