Marc Marquez has joined Lewis Hamilton in achieving something huge within his motorsport series. The Spanish MotoGP rider has a record-breaking 100 poles to his name.
Just like Hamilton, who has 104 poles to his name, Marquez tops the charts in his class. That is not where the comparisons stop as Marquez is well on his way to winning his ninth world championship - his seventh in the MotoGP class.
Marquez is the Hamilton of MotoGP
Marquez won the Italian GP at the Mugello Circuit in Florence, Italy. This has left Marquez with a 40-point gap to runner-up Alex Marquez, his little brother. The gap to his teammate Francesco Bagnaia is currently 110 points.
Unlike Hamilton, however, Marquez is nowhere near to breaking the championship record held in his series. The current record held is 15 wins by Giacomo Agostini and was set in the '70s. Valentino Rossi, regarded as the greatest of all time by many, has nine world championships to his name, seven of which in MotoGP (previously known as 500cc).
In Formula 1, the record is seven, which Hamilton is currently tied with Michael Schumacher for. The last time Hamilton came close to winning the
championship was 2021 when he went head to head with Max Verstappen. However, in the last race of the season, he lost out to the Dutchman in what has been deemed one of the most controversial races in the history of Formula 1.
The 2025 MotoGP season is roughly halfway over, with only 13 races left to go. If Marquez wins the championship this year, he will tie Valentino Rossi with nine world championships.
