Normally, the second free practice would be scheduled at this time. But because of the new format that Formula 1 is testing this weekend, Friday afternoon is dedicated to 'normal' qualifying.

From FP1 to qualifying
Only the first free practice has been completed and on Friday afternoon the action is already meaningful. With 'normal' qualifying, the drivers will determine the grid for the sprint qualifying race. The second free practice session will be held on Saturday morning.
There is no pole position award on Friday afternoon, that is reserved for the winner of the 100km sprint race. So you can actually see this as qualifying for qualifying. It will be interesting to see how the drivers cope with the new qualifying format that will be run over two days.

Hamilton not on pole for some time
It's been a while since Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in qualifying. We have to go back to the Spanish Grand Prix for that. On the street circuits of Monaco and Baku, it was Charles Leclerc who beat the Brit, and in the three Grands Prix that followed it was Max Verstappen.
