Russell sets the bar for Williams in 2021: Hopeful of overtaking these teams

The Williams team finished last in the 2020 constructors' standings. They hope to be able to compete in midfield next year. Williams drivers George Russell and Nicolas Latifi explain the plan.

Williams has recently come under new leadership with the takeover of Dorilton Capital and exit of the Williams family that once founded the team. Speaking to Motorsport-Total.com, Russell explains what he believes the acquisition will mean for the team in the future: "With the new owners, we have an exciting future with more financial support ahead of us. We can therefore focus more on the future, 2022 and beyond, but at the same time keep an eye on 2021 and the progress of the car."

Fight in the midfield

Not only will the new owners mean a change for Williams' organisation, but the announced closer cooperation with Mercedes could also provide the boost the team needs to fight in midfield. Russell makes Williams' plans for the future concrete as follows: "Hopefully we can take a step forward and cement our place in front of Haas and Alfa Romeo. We want to try to catch up with the end of midfield."

Latifi agrees, and says that Williams will be able to bridge the gap with the other teams: "Very often just a little bit more performance in the car would have been enough to make it”, he argues. “Then we would have been more likely to be involved in the midfield fight."
