For both Nicholas Latifi and Romain Grosjean, the Turkish Grand Prix was a race to forget. Latifi had been struggling all weekend and to top it off he crashed into Grosjean when the Frenchman was lapping him.
No visibility in mirrors
The crash ultimately meant that both Latifi and Grosjean - a few laps later - were unable to finish the race. On Motorsportweek.com Latifi explains what caused the crash. "First of all, it was my fault," says the Canadian. "I haven't been able to look in my mirrors since the first lap. Not by rain or fog, they were just covered with a layer of dust and dirt, just like the rest of the car."
Lapped
When Latifi was put lapped by one of the Renaults and Grosjean, things went wrong. "I went to the inside of the track so they had the race line, but they were much further away than I thought because I couldn't see them. When the Renault was over, I was already at the corner. I didn't have a grip and understeer meant I was driving into Romain."
Although drivers are warned both by their team and by the blue lights on the track, Latifi said it wasn't enough. "The radio messages only help in part. I know from the beep of the blue lights when they are within a second, but without visibility it is very difficult to estimate."
