The 24h of Le Mans is traditionally held every year around the second weekend of June. Due to the coronavirus, the event was moved to September, but in 2021 the race is again scheduled for 12 and 13 June. Formula 1 often has a race on the same weekend, which means that many F1 drivers will not be able to take part in the special race at Le Mans.
According to Jean Todt, President of the FIA, this must change. "It is clear that we have to do as much as we can to avoid a clash between the WEC and Formula 1," explained Todt to the news agency Reuters. According to Todt, the races in other classes will be taken into account, but he cannot guarantee that there will be no clashes.
No 2021 calendar for F1 yet
"It also depends on where F1 is going to race, because time zones are also important. I can assure you that we will try as hard as we can to get it right."
F1 has yet to publish a provisional calendar for 2021, which is still some way off due to the coronavirus and the uncertainty it brings with it. Chase Carey has already indicated that not much has yet been decided. "We are taking a lot of account of a 2021 calendar that is not quite back to normal," he said about the 2021 calendar on Sky Sports.
