Carlos Sainz scored points in his home race for the fifth consecutive year after he finished eighth in the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Sainz started 11th on the grid and struggled in the early part of the race, taking advantage of the safety car caused by his teammate Lando Norris’ crash with Lance Stroll.

Sainz told Dieter Rencken after the race: "I always want to bring points home but today I didn't feel that it was in the car, certainly not because I was so far from behind in the beginning. I want to thank the public for being behind me, they are partly responsible before I could make a march.

"It was a weird race. Halfway through the race I had trouble holding eleventh place. I had Daniel Ricciardo in the back of my back and I had trouble in the last sector. I had no feeling in the car."
