New wing cause of Ericsson crash, Sauber confirm

After Marcus Ericsson's spectacular crash in free practice on Friday, Sauber have confirmed that it was the rear wing of the Swede that caused him to suddenly spin out.

It was a very spectacular crash indeed, with the Sauber of Ericsson flipping multiple times before coming to a stand-still, but it was a very weird one at the same time, as the Swede was driving in a straight line before spinning. Sauber confirm it was the DRS of the newly installed rear wing that was acting up.

"This is the first time [this problem has happened] and probably due to the developed downforce for today," team principal Fred Vasseur told F1i.

"It is a new rear wing, but it is not the wing, just the DRS flap.

"Marcus is okay, we had a chat together after the session.

"He was disappointed to miss the rest of the practice session, and also a bit shocked, but the car will be ready to race."
