The first free practice session in America is dominated by rookie testing. This year, F1 teams are required to cede at least two practice sessions to a driver who has not yet been in F1 action. With only four Grands Prix to go, there are still plenty of teams that have not yet met that requirement.

At COTA, the first session of the weekend will see Robert Shwartzman (Ferrari), Theo Pourchaire (Alfa Romeo), Logan Sargeant (Williams) and Alex Palou (McLaren) in action. For all four of these drivers, it is also their debut in an official F1 session. It is not for Antonio Giovinazzi who drives for Haas. However, due to his F1 experience, this does not count as a rookie test.
