Wolff admits Mercedes are still "not on top" of their issues

Team boss Toto Wolff remains disappointed with the Mercedes performance despite a solid P5 and P6 in the Miami Grand Prix. Wolff draws confidence from the team's performance on Friday but admits the team are not yet on top of the issue.

Lewis Hamilton started in P6, with Russell unable to reach Q3. Hamilton stayed ahead of Russell for much of the Grand Prix, but the seven-time World Champion lost out by luck when the safety car came out. At the restart, Russell and Hamilton were joined by former Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas. The Alfa Romeo driver got out of the way after a mistake.

"Russell stayed out for a long time. We were betting on a safety car and that materialised coming from nowhere and it went against Hamilton who lost a position. There is no happy or happy moment, there is just the third quickest on the road in no-mans land," Wolff told Sky Sports.

On Friday, it looked as if Mercedes might've been able to fight for second-row, or even pole position. But that didn't follow through on Saturday in qualifying. Wolff explains how the team are not on top of their issues.

"We had a good Friday. We need to dissect why that was and come back. This is where we are.. we are maybe not as quick in qualifying then you have the outliers but we go back to where we are behind Red Bull and Ferrari. We will be looking at all the data that we have generated and find out where we had good sessions on Friday because at the moment we are not on top of it," he concluded.
