For years the plan has been to host a Grand Prix in Las Vegas, but it was never confirmed. That changed on Thursday night, however, as from 2023 the F1 grid will visit Las Vegas for a spectacular Grand Prix, with a long straight on 'The Strip', the iconic street in the heart of the American city.

Stefano Domenicali, as F1 CEO, is one of the founding fathers of the plan in Las Vegas, so the Italian is happy that everything is now in place and the plans are finalised. According to Domenicali, it is important for Formula 1 to grow in America, even more so than they already do thanks to Drive To Survive and the additional Grand Prix in Miami.

Las Vegas as an iconic race?

"We do believe, without being arrogant, that Formula 1 will be something that the American fans will love to be involved even more", Domenicali explained to Sky Sports. Formula One believes it is making an important step, not only by racing in Las Vegas, but also by holding the race on Saturday night. The timing was long considered because American sports fans are more likely to be in front of the tube on Saturday nights.

So a change in Formula 1, which Domenicali says will come back often. Indeed, he thinks Las Vegas is going to be a new fixture on the F1 calendar. "Nobody puts on a party like Las Vegas and I predict that this will be the iconic race, the flagship race, of F1 within a couple of years."
