While Max Verstappen is hoping to fight for the 2020 championship, the Dutchman said he cares little against who he will be competing against for it, adding he only has eyes for the title itself rather than the competition.
One goal
Verstappen might have extended his contract at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing until the end of 2023, but this doesn't mean he'll remain at the Bulls for the full length of the deal. The 22-year-old has one target in mind - to win the title. How he wins it and who he wins it with matters little to him.
“For me it doesn’t matter who I am fighting as long as we are fighting for first,” the eight-time Grand Prix winner was quoted by Crash.net.
“If it is a pink car or grey or red, fighting against me it doesn’t matter. Nor if it is a six-time world champion or a rookie in the car."
Red Bull and Verstappen will mainly be fighting Mercedes for the 2020 title, with the Silver Arrows claiming the last six double championships, a joint F1 record. Again, Verstappen does not care about the past.
“At the end of the day when you look over the last 10 years and you see the results you are not going to think about if you were fighting a world champion so for me I just want to win.”
Typically, Red Bull start a season poorly and develop their way back into contention for race wins, but it appears the Milton Keynes-based side are ready from the off in 2020.
“Everybody is very motivated and I really do believe we can get back to those winning ways which Red Bull has had before, so for me there was no reason to change. I feel really good in the team.”
