Szafnauer confirms: "Name will be Aston Martin F1 Team" in 2021

Racing Point team principal Otmar Szafnauer has shed more light on the Aston Martin situation with regards to the current Racing Point crew, confirming the side will convert to 'Aston Martin F1 Team' in 2021.

A consortium led by Lawrence Stroll bought a stake in Aston Martin last week, coupled with the announcement the British carmaker would be making its return to F1 as a constructor - as a works team, no less.

Szafnauer shed more light on the situation on Racing Point's website, explaining the team will not change its name until the beginning of 2021.

“There’s no immediate impact on our current campaign and we will continue to compete as Racing Point until the rebrand takes place at the start of the 2021 season," the Romanian-born American said.

"It’s important we don’t take our eyes off the main task for 2020, which is to be competitive on the racetrack with the RP20.

"From then [2021] we will be known simply as ‘Aston Martin F1 Team’ - so the Racing Point name will disappear. It’s exciting to transition into a manufacturer team and we’ve got the best part of a year to make all those changes – much of which will be happening behind-the-scenes."

Even though Racing Point is a young team, Szafnauer reminded everyone the team "has been in business, under various names, for 30 years", saying the side is ready to convert into a manufacturer team.
