Renault: "Significant opportunities" to "challenge for wins and titles" post-2021

With regulation changes set to change the look of Formula 1 from 2021 onwards, Renault team principal Cyril Abiteboul sees an opportunity for his team to be fighting at the top of the pack, saying he can see his side fighting for wins and titles "in a reasonable time".

The new regulations in two years' time are set to shake things up significantly, with less development and a budget cap being the main ingredients for the grid coming closer together.

Renault, who re-entered F1 in 2016 as a constructor, have ambitions to eventually work their way back to the top of the pack, like they were in the middle of last decade.

Abiteboul seemed happy with the new regulations, as he explained how they're progressive while still respecting older teams like the French works team themselves.

“Despite some compromises made to bring together the diversity of models created by the current Concorde Agreement and its unsustainable discrepancies," the Frenchman was quoted by RaceFans.net, "these measures represent significant opportunities for a team like ours, increasing our prospects to reduce the gap to the front and challenge for wins and titles in a reasonable time frame.

“We will continue to work together to fine-tune these regulations, but the fact the fundamentals are now secured will allow us to plan the developments required between now and the first race of 2021.”
