Albon gets closer to Toro Rosso signature after Nissan-split

Formula 2 runner-up Alexander Albon has split with Nissan, opening the door for a seemingly imminent move to Toro Rosso in Formula 1, with the Faenza-based team still having an open seat.

Albon had already been announced as Nissan's Formula E driver next to Sebastien Buemi, but with interest from Toro Rosso mounting, the Thai-British driver opted not to take part in testing for the Japanese team.

Nissan had previously said to not let go of Albon, but they've switched their stance on that now, as they released in a statement that Albon is no longer part of the team.

They stated to have “agreed to part ways with Albon exiting his contract to take up a different opportunity in motorsport.”

“Nissan thanks Albon for his efforts to date and wishes him the best of luck for his future endeavors.”

An announcement from Toro Rosso could come at any time now. Nissan will announce their Formula E driver this Friday.
