Sainz: McLaren "know how to recover"

McLaren-bound Carlos Sainz believes that the team can bounce back from their current slump in fortunes. The British outfit has struggled since the beginning of the hybrid era which included a disastrous rekindling of their iconic partnership with Honda.

The Spaniard will join the team in 2019 alongside junior driver Lando Norris and is confident that they can fix the issues they are having currently. Since switching to Renault power and ditching Honda this season, they have continued to languish down the field and show little sign of improving.

"All the companies, all the teams, all the drivers go through highs and lows and McLaren is in one of its lows," he told news agency EFE.

"But I also believe that, being one of the best teams in the history of F1, they will know how to recover."

Sainz did admit however that he was not optimistic anyone could dethrone the top three teams, with the current landscape in Formula One split into two divisions.

"If you're not in a Ferrari or a Mercedes, winning the world championship is a bit difficult," he added.

"They (McLaren) realised they were maybe not going in the right direction. But I think that has helped them to learn, reset a bit and start from zero.

"That means we must be realistic and know that we will probably be fighting for positions similar to the ones I am fighting for right now with Renault."
