Ricciardo hopes engine switch wasn't because Renault relationship "gone to sh*t"

Daniel Ricciardo hopes that Red Bull's decision to switch engine suppliers next season is not just because their relationship with Renault has "gone to sh*t." He hopes his Austrian team have done enough data work on Honda's engine as he remains unsure about its performance.

His boss, Christian Horner has revealed he is confident Honda will give Red Bull a significant boost next season. But the Australian driver isn't that convinced.

He said in an interview on GP fans: "I think probably until I was to drive a Honda, I wouldn't know.

"I've obviously heard the team out more once, and they've given me the reasons. The important thing to understand for me why they've done it, it can't just be purely on emotions.

"Like 'it's gone to sh*t with Renault, whatever, and we're doing it because we want to change."

Through this interview, it sounds certain that he will remain at Red Bull next season.

The Honda engine has been running in the Toro Rosso car since the start of the season. It might be performing better than it did in the McLaren, but reliability is still a clear issue. It's hardly surprising that Ricciardo is worried.

At the start of the season, he made it clear he wants a car which is capable of winning the championship. With seemingly no offers from either Ferrari or Mercedes, Red Bull could be all he has.
