Williams has a seat for 2023: 'He's the favourite'

Mark Webber thinks Logan Sargeant has the best chance of getting the seat at Williams. The American has a big advantage with his nationality, but there is a risk that he might not manage to get his super licence.

Williams and Latifi are parting ways after three years. The Canadian never made a great impression at the Grove-based team and is due to leave at the end of this season. Alexander Albon previously signed a longer commitment at Williams and the question now is who will sit next to the Thai in 2023.

Spot vacant at Williams

''I think Logan Sargeant,'' said Webber when asked at Channel 4 who is the favourite for the seat at Williams. ''He’s in Formula 2 this year, he might need a bit of introducing to our fans at home. In general, I think he’s the favourite – American, Liberty [Media, F1’s owner] they are pretty keen on him. But there’s some Super Licence challenges around him in terms of points, championship position, in Abu Dhabi,'' said the former F1 driver.

Indeed, Sargeant does not yet have a super licence. The American is fourth in the F2 championship and would have enough there to get the licence. However, things are very close in the championship, so even the number 11 in the standings can still overtake Sargeant. The American needs to finish fifth to accumulate enough points for his licence.

Williams will therefore have to wait for the final F2 race weekend in Abu Dhabi before it can officially appoint Sargeant. Meanwhile, Mick Schumacher and Antonio Giovinazzi are also being linked to the team as possible options if Sargeant does not obtain his super licence. Schumacher would be particularly in the picture if he is replaced at Haas.
