Formula One and the participating teams met at the F1 Commission meeting on Wednesday and discussed the idea of holding six sprint events next year.
Discussions are ongoing and the current debate revolves around the sport's budget cap, the BBC have reported. Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari believe that the sprint weekends are too expensive because they include two races instead of one. In that case, they want the current budget ceiling of $145m (£114m) to remain in place, rather than reducing it to $140m as planned.

Other teams are not keen on the idea, which is why talks have stalled. It has not yet been decided which venues will host the sprint races in 2022, but the plan is a mix of historic circuits, such as Silverstone, and the better paying new circuits, such as those in the Middle East.
There have also been discussions about increasing the number of points awarded in the sprint race on Saturday, as well as reversing the decision to award pole position to the winner of the sprint race rather than the driver who sets the fastest time in qualifying.
