Russell hopes for change: 'We saw it in 2009 and 2014'

Formula 1 is facing quite a few changes in the coming years. The FIA is hoping that the teams will be closer together in 2022, increasing the excitement in motorsport. However, George Russell wonders what effect this will have.

The British driver is performing very well this season at Williams and even managed to score some points at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The driver himself also sees that the distance to the top teams is growing, but is curious if the federation can change this. "Sport is about talent. The talent of the driver, the engineers, the designers. We have seen in the past that teams had huge budgets, but did nothing with it", he remarks in an interview with Auto, Motor und Sport.

Russell, therefore, thinks that the responsibility lies with the teams themselves. "I would say that the team with the most talent, the most motivation and the most fire will be at the top. But if a change in regulations is so obvious, who knows? We saw it in 2009 and 2014. Everything can turn around. But Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari will be in the top five."

Russell possibly switches to Mercedes

There is a chance that Russell will no longer drive for Williams next season, but for Mercedes. The driver can therefore get ready for a better car with which he can compete for the world championship.
