The sixth Grand Prix of the 2020 season is scheduled for August 16 in Spain, but that race seemed to be in jeopardy after an increase in corona infections. On Wednesday, Auto, Motor und Sport reported this, but now it appears that nothing is going on for the time being.
Racing in Spain can go on
Last week the inhabitants of Barcelona were asked if they wanted to stay at home longer. There was also a ban on meetings where more than ten people would meet. This was because a peak in corona infections was observed in the region. This could have an effect on Formula 1, but this is not the case at the moment.
"Everything is going ahead as planned", said a spokesman of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to Motorsport.com. "We are not affected by the restrictions. Everything is controlled and reinforced with F1, the FIA and circuit protocols, which are very strict."
Should it come to the point that the Grand Prix cannot go ahead, Formula 1 will have to look for an alternative circuit. Earlier a third race at Silverstone was suggested, but at the moment that doesn't seem to be something that is being seriously looked at. This for the simple reason that the Grand Prix in Spain will continue as planned.
