A lot has been said in the last month about a lack of diversity in Formula 1. It is a discussion that was initiated by Lewis Hamilton in particular after the racism debate flared up in the United States. According to three-time world champion Jackie Stewart that problem is not there at all in Formula 1.

"I don't think the problem is as big as it seems. There is no resistance to change if someone is smart and good at what they do. They will be accepted in Formula 1," said Stewart in the Good Morning Britain show. He agrees with the opinion of Mario Andretti.

Education the solution

Stewart does not deny that there are demonstrably fewer people with darker skin colour working in Formula 1, but the cause must be sought elsewhere. According to him, the sport itself is open to anyone who has the right qualifications, but they should be given the chance to earn them. The solution therefore lies in education.

"What we need to do is ensure that men and women, regardless of skin colour, are trained as engineers. If there are different races that want to work in Formula 1, they should do so through education"
