The FIA and F1 teams are wanting to find a better chassis that will absorb the double impact which occurred during Anthoine Hubert's fatal crash which happened in Belgium. Hubert died after hitting the barriers and then drifting back across the run-off area where Juan Manuel Correa collided with him side-on at high speed.
Despite the incident happening in Formula 2, the Formula 1 teams acknowledged how faraway the current chassis is from the levels needed. Andy Green, SportPesa Racing Point's technical director discussed this point ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.
"The impact was huge, that is the most important conclusion. It is a huge blow and the current chassis, whether it is an F1 or F2 car, can never absorb such an impact. It was not a few percent too much, we are very far away," Green said.
The intention is that an improvement is made to the new technical regulation before 2021, but the FIA actually wants an adjustment for 2020. All teams agree with this if a good solution is found.
