Wolff confirms interest in Schumacher but "couldn't make room"

Mick Schumacher claimed his first Formula 2 race victory ahead of the summer break as looks to make another surge in the second half of the season similar to what he achieved last year in Formula 3. Schumacher has now been part of the Ferrari academy for some time, but Toto Wolff confirms Mercedes would have taken him on.

“Of course we considered including him in the youth program, but in the end, it was decided not to make room. Simply because at that time we were already struggling to find a place for George (Russell) and Esteban (Ocon)," team boss Toto Wolff says in the Italian Gazzetta Dello Sport.

“Mick is a good guy and through Formula 3 and Formula 2 has really become someone with a personality of their own. I am sure he will also do well in Formula 1 when the time is right."

Seeing Schumacher drive his father's 2004 Formula 1 world championship-winning car in Germany in July brought special memories for many. The 21-year-old has driven this seasons Ferrari in a test as well as the Alfa Romeo.
