Alonso surprised with busy schedule: "Maybe I'll return to F1 to rest!"

Despite ditching a hectic 21-race calendar, Fernando Alonso suggests Formula 1 is a "rest" compared to his schedule in 2019. The 37-year-old left F1 at the end of 2018 and has already won the Daytona 24 hour race.

Renewing his relationship with McLaren, he'll enter the Indy500 in pursuit of motorsport's triple crown and is rumoured to be interested in the 2020 running of the Dakar Rally.

The word retirement is used for slowing down, but not in the two-time world champion's case.

"I have more to do this year than 12 months ago," he said in an interview on grandprix.com.

"Of course it will be stressful for those in Formula 1 as soon as the season starts. But I have not had a single month off this month, and in February the tests with (Le Mans team) Toyota start again. The Indy programme will also start so I will be very, very busy until June."

"I did not expect this busy schedule. People ask me what life is like without formula one and my answer is 'Maybe I'll come back to the F1 paddock to rest a little'."
