Webber: Own goals cost Ferrari the title

Former Formula One driver Mark Webber believes "a few own goals" ended up costing Ferrari in the world championship battle with Mercedes.

Sebastian Vettel performed arguably better than Lewis Hamilton in the first half of the season - but in the end, the consistency of Hamilton and Mercedes ensured yet another double for the two.

12-time grand prix winner Webber is now a pundit for Channel 4 television in the UK and he has offered some views on what went wrong for Ferrari and Vettel.

Webber was a team-mate with Vettel at Red Bull Racing, during their dominant spell - claiming four consecutive world titles - believes that a combination of mistakes on and off the track have added up to inflict the pain on Ferrari.

"It (the championship) had all the ingredients, particularly from Sebastian and Lewis to go on the drivers side anyway, to go pretty deep, but obviously it didn't turn out that way," Webber told Speedcafe.com.

"Lewis and Mercedes are just too, too resilient and too consistent to have a good battle going on there. Obviously Ferrari had a few own goals, to say the least, from the cockit and the pit-wall and lots of different things which fed the fuel on Mercedes' side in what was probably Lewis' best season, personally."
