Portland surprising newcomer to Formula E calendar

The Formula E calendar for the 2022-2023 season has been completed with a race in the US city of Portland in the state of Oregon.

The United States is indispensable on the Formula E calendar, having hosted a race in the country since 2016. Formula E previously raced in Miami and Long Beach before settling in New York. Due to renovations at the Red Hook Cruise Terminal, New York cannot host a race for the upcoming season. This forced the organisers of the electric racing class to look for an alternative venue. Formula E was considering options to co-host a weekend with the IndyCar to ensure the US remained on the calendar, and St Petersburg in Florida was considered a possible venue.

Gap filled

Following this week's World Motor Sport Council meeting, it has been confirmed that Portland will fill the fallen gap and host the 12th round of the season on 24 June. This confirms that Formula E will not return to Seoul at another venue, as renovations to the Olympic Sports Complex meant the championship could not return to the Korean capital.

Portland joins Hyderabad, Sao Paulo and Cape Town as new venues in Formula E's upcoming ninth season, which kicks off in Mexico on 14 January.
