FP2 Report | Max Verstappen beats Charles Leclerc to top time-sheet in Russia

Max Verstappen has topped the timesheet in FP2 at the Russian Grand Prix. He managed to beat the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc and set a blistering 1.33.162 around the Sochi circuit. It was a relatively clean session with teams and drivers all getting some solid laps under their belt.

The session started slowly with teams running install laps and testing their cars on the Sochi circuit. Charles Leclerc spent much of the session at the top of the timesheet and looked a whole lot faster than his teammate Sebastian Vettel who couldn't get close to him.

Mercedes were nearly a second off the pace in the qualifying runs but the car looked heavy so maybe they were sandbagging and running with a higher fuel load.

Max Verstappen put together a great lap and set a blistering first sector and managed to hold on and claim the fastest lap with a 1.33.162. It's worth remembering he has a five-place grid penalty.

Teams took the opportunity to do longer stints at the end of the session. They were testing to see how long the tyres would last to help them work out their strategy for the race.

With rain forecast for tomorrow, teams took the opportunity to get the most of today's session in the dry. Some good mileage was clocked up and teams will feel more prepared for qualifying and for the race.
