Verstappen explains problems at the start: 'That wasn't top'

Max Verstappen explains where things went wrong at the start. Valtteri Bottas was able to overtake the Dutchman for P1, but the Red Bull had some gear and tyre issues.

There was a lot of talk today about the wing at Mercedes. Jack Plooij asks if Verstappen can let it pass him by? "Of course, if you know me a bit you know that's not a problem."

The start did not go according to plan. Bottas overtook the Dutchman at the start for P1. "They also had softer tyres. The temperature dropped very quickly so that just helped their tyres a lot more. I also had my gear sync going down as well. That's not top-notch, " Verstappen explained.

Race becomes difficult with tyres

Verstappen did get into Bottas' DRS, but it wasn't enough. "It was difficult to overtake here. The tyres wear very hard, it's very difficult to follow here in that middle sector. Tomorrow we will try to have a normal start again. It's going to be a lot harder on the tyres, it's going to be very hot so we'll see."
