Wolff hits out at Alonso: 'The universe does not revolve around you'

Toto Wolff believes the reason Fernando Alonso has not become world champion more than twice has to do with his attitude towards the sport. The Mercedes team boss believes the Spanish driver went for the big money and missed out on opportunities as a result.

"Alonso is without a doubt one of the best Formula 1 drivers who has ever raced," Wolff said in conversation with Daily Mail. "It's disappointing for the sport that he doesn't have more than two titles to his name, but it's all about knowing that you are part of the universe and that the universe doesn't revolve around you."

Wolff: 'Some drivers are unwise'

He therefore thinks Alonso has made unwise choices in his career. "Some drivers are unwise, they come into the media spotlight and start believing they are the centre of the universe. You're not, none of us are. We are all satellites, we are the planets rotating," continued the Mercedes team boss.

According to Wolff, intelligence is crucial these days to succeed as a Formula 1 driver. "There are many examples where a great talent failed because he lacked intelligence. Some did not even make it to Formula 1," the Austrian said.
