Hamilton keen to improve overnight: "We've got some work to do"

Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes have some work to do overnight to try and ensure they beat Red Bull Racing to pole position for the United States Grand Prix. The Brit is currently six points behind title rival Max Verstappen in the Formula 1 World Championship.

Hamilton, who has won five Grands Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, came second in the first free practice session. The Brit beat his teammate the second time around, but Perez topped the timesheets for Red Bull. The Brit explains his thoughts on the sessions.

"Generally, it's been a good day. Still, work to do. That's the way it is. FP1 was a really good session, made some changes and I wasn't happy in FP2. We lost some ground, or they gained some ground so we've got some work to do tonight," Hamilton is quoted by Sky Sports.

Tyres

In FP1, Hamilton reported on the radio that his tyres were overheating badly. Even though temperatures are high, he doesn't believe the weather is to blame for this.

"I don't think it's the heat. It's literally just the track surface is rougher than before, so it's pretty much impossible to keep the temperature out of the tyre. So there's more degradation than we've experienced before," Hamilton added.
