There have been sixteen races and the difference between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton is six points. The statistics of the past ten years show that the driver who is on top after race number sixteen wins the title.

Will Verstappen keep up the series?

The statistics speak for Verstappen. From 2011 until 2020 the driver who was on top after the sixteenth race also took the title. This was not the case in 2010 when Sebastian Vettel came back from P3 to win his first title after the sixteenth race.

In his next three titles, Vettel each year held the lead after race sixteen. The same was true of Hamilton's past six titles. In 2016, during Nico Rosberg's year, the German was also on top after race sixteen.

With six races to go, a slightly longer season than the previous ten years, and a small points gap, Verstappen will have to fight hard not to break this run. But the statistics are on his side.
