Liam Lawson was very close to a DTM title, but after he was forced out of the race by title rival Kelvin van der Linde, and Maximilian Götz ran off with the title thanks to Mercedes team orders. All that was left was a P2 in the final standings for the Red Bull junior, leaving him very disappointed.

Götz was running in third position three laps before the flag fell in the final DTM race. It would be enough for Lawson to take the championship, but Mercedes told Lucas Auer and Philip Ellis in the closing stages to get off the gas so Götz and Mercedes could celebrate a title together.

"For me, obviously the two incidents were separate, in the end there were team games in the last few laps, but the turn one incident for me was the most frustrating part of the whole weekend because the exact same thing happened in the first race and basically you would think that people learn from their mistakes, so it was just gutting not to get the chance to actually just get to the first corner and have a chance at the race," Lawson said in conversation with Motorsport.tv.

Lawson not the biggest fan of DTM

Helmut Marko recently announced that Lawson will not be facing a second season in the DTM. The New Zealander himself is not very sad about this, although he has to admit that driving in the German championship has been valuable for him. "In the future, this is not something [I want to continue], not the championship, not the way the weekend went down. I mean, I've loved this season. I really enjoyed my DTM campaign, it was really so much fun.

"A lot different in many ways to what I'm used to, and in a way I felt like working with this team that I didn't feel so much like a junior anymore. I felt like I was treated a bit more like a professional and that side of it was awesome, I really enjoyed that.

"So the whole season as a whole was fantastic and I'm really proud of the whole team, but the way the season finished, no, it's not something that I expected, or saw coming or would like to be a part of in the future."
