"I’m sure we could have 35 races if the promoter got his way"

In 2022 we will have the longest Formula 1 calendar in the history of the sport. No less than 23 races are scheduled for the teams, which also has its drawbacks. For the teams and their staff it will be more intense than ever.

Dwindling calendar

Christian Horner also sees the ever-lengthening series of Grands Prix, and particularly points out the need to strike the right balance between the commercial interests of the sport and the welfare of the people involved.

"It's a gruelling calendar," the Red Bull Racing team boss told several media outlets including F1i.com. "It's like in any sport, the thirst and demand for Formula One is what it is and it's always trying to measure that balance." He believes that if proper attention is not paid, the calendar will continue to grow. "I’m sure we could have 35 races if the promoter got his way."

Finding balance for the teams

According to Horner, it is therefore very important to find a good balance and you can basically sustain a season with one permanent crew. "It's gruelling and demanding. Especially in these COVID times with the ever-changing calendar and the triple-headers. Also in terms of logistics, with races in Brazil, Mexico and the Middle East. It's tough. It's really hard."

According to Horner, all the teams are handling it phenomenally so far. "We certainly don't get people saying 'I don't want to be at a race'. It's balancing."
