Formula 1 has big plans in terms of carbon emissions: they should be neutral by 2030. To that end, synthetic fuels are being introduced, which should reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65 per cent.

A new fuel made from 90 percent fossil fuel and ten percent ethanol will already be introduced in 2022. However, the plan is to develop a 100 percent renewable fuel for the launch of the new generation of Formula One engines.

Less carbon emissions in Formula 1

The new fuel will be made in laboratories, using underground CO2 storage, municipal waste or non-food biomass. This should reduce carbon emissions by 65 percent compared to fossil fuels.

The synthetic fuel should have no impact on the performance of the cars. "It delivers as much energy as the current fossil fuels used in Formula 1, which means the cars will remain as fast as they are now," reads the statement on Formula1.com.
