Callum Ilott is Ferrari's test and reserve driver this year. Robert Shwartzman, however, hopes to be in that same position in 2022 with the Italian powerhouse. The Formula 2 driver has a lot of competition though, as Marcus Armstrong and even Antonio Giovinazzi (if he is replaced at Alfa Romeo Racing) are also candidates.

Shwartzman awaits

“It’s not for me to decide. I try to do the best job that I can and prove to Ferrari that I’m worthy of being with them," Shwartzman is quoted by Motorsport-Week.com. In Formula 2, the Russian is currently in third position in the standings.

His gap to leader Oscar Piastri is 43 points with two race weekends to go. A championship is not completely excluded, although it will obviously not be an easy task. Shwartzman is determined to go all the way in the remainder of the 2021 season.

Focus on F2 for now

"I hope they see it. As I said, my side I need to focus more on F2 and if I’m going to get the chance to get the third seat, I’ll be very glad and very happy. Obviously, it’s going to be an extra motivation for me, because you need to work, I need to do some sim running and generally to prepare myself, just in case there is a chance at some point of me jumping into a Formula 1 car."

In recent years, if someone dropped out at Ferrari, Giovinazzi would fill that spot. The test and reserve driver of Ferrari would then step into the Alfa Romeo car. How that will be next year is still unknown and will partly depend on developments surrounding Giovinazzi's future.
