From next season on, all Formula 1 teams are obliged to give young drivers a chance in a number of free practice sessions. This way, rookies can get more experience in Formula 1 before making the switch. Among Formula 2 drivers this new rule is welcomed with open arms.

Better opportunities for rookies

Of course, many young drivers are already getting opportunities in free practice, but often those drivers are then affiliated with the junior programs of the respective teams. For drivers who are not part of a junior program, it is a lot harder to be able to do a Formula 1 test.

One of those drivers is Felipe Drugovich. The Brazilian has already won three races in Formula 2. "I think it really helps to do more kilometres," he told Motorsportweek.com. "A lot of the teams are not aware of what some drivers are capable of. Once they are put in their cars, they see that we can be fast. I think that's a good opportunity and hopefully I can get some opportunities next year as well."

Teams need to look outside their organisations

Juri Vips, part of Red Bull's training program, agrees with Drugovich. "It's good for the drivers in the junior sections, but also for the drivers who are not part of that. Because it's mandatory, teams like Aston Martin and McLaren will also have juniors testing. They will have to look outside their organisations."

"It's really nice that rookies get the opportunity to drive an F1 car, because it's something special," enthuses Robert Shwartzman. The Russian is part of the Ferrari Driver Academy. In addition, he also sees benefits for the teams. "I think it can also be interesting for the teams, because in my opinion a young driver can give something new to the team, some new information that they can use in the future."
