During the second free practice session of the Russian Grand Prix Antonio Giovinazzi caused a red flag after a hard crash. The Italian tried to make his way to the pit lane, but his team forced him to stop at the side of the track due to the amount of damage.

It's not a good start to the weekend for Giovinazzi, who is still unsure of his place at Alfa Romeo. Following the confirmation of Valtteri Bottas for 2022, it is still unclear who will take his seat alongside the Finn from next year.

"The sessions were going pretty well until the incident. FP1 wasn’t too bad and FP2 was an improvement, overall a good start of the weekend", the Alfa Romeo driver told Sky Sports after FP2.

Reason for the crash

Giovinazzi explains how the crash was caused. "The wind was rather strong, I got a bit of understeer outside the corner, touched the astroturf on the exit and lost the rear. Tomorrow is another day, we need to see what the weather is going to be like and continue our work", said the Italian. He eventually finished in P13 and P14 in the practice sessions.
