Slowly but surely McLaren is coming out of the valley where the team was in recent years. With its first victory since 2012 at Monza, McLaren is finally a winning team again. Carlos Sainz traded McLaren for Ferrari this season, but he doesn't regret it at all.

Still no perfect weekend

Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz managed to bring the ailing McLaren back to third place in the championship in 2019 and 2020, the position where the team is also this season. Sainz's move to Ferrari at the start of this season was another step backwards. The Italians finished only sixth in the championship in 2020, their worst result since 1980. Yet also there the upward trend has begun. Ferrari is currently fourth in the championship, thirteen-and-a-half points behind McLaren.

Sainz has been on the podium twice this season but is not yet the driver he was at McLaren last season. "At Ferrari, I still haven't had the perfect weekends that I was able to do at McLaren. We'll see if I can do it before the end of the season," Sainz told an interview with the likes of Car And Driver. Sainz only scored no points in two races this season.

No regrets about leaving

Sainz does not regret his departure from McLaren. "I certainly don't regret not being at McLaren anymore, but on the other hand, nobody asked me the same question when I was on the podium at Monte Carlo or at the Hungaroring. I'm having the best year of my life at Ferrari and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world."

Next season Ferrari hopes to take a big step forward with the new regulations and a new engine. "Time will tell if I'm wrong or not, but I really believe very much in this project. We are not talking about winning a single race, but about what can happen in the years to come," the Spaniard concludes.
