Horner and Wolff want more cars on F1 grid: 'Not enough seats'

With only one seat left to give in Formula 1 for 2022, several talents seem to be missing the boat. It immediately creates a demand for more cars on the grid. Christian Horner and Toto Wolff have their own ideas on how to make that happen.

Talents miss out on Formula 1

Since the departure of Manor in 2016, Formula 1 now consists of just ten teams, and that means only twenty seats in the premier class of motorsport. As a result, potential Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri, for example, seems to be out of the running, and Nyck de Vries and Callum Ilott also seem to be missing out on their chance. Guanyu Zhou's money will reportedly be on Alfa Romeo's last seat.

''I think we are probably one or two teams short. There are many young talents in Formula 2 who deserve a chance, but there are simply not enough seats. You have to wait for a driver like Kimi to step down before a seat becomes available. I really think Formula 1 could accommodate one or two more teams,'' Horner said according to Motorsport.com.

Extra seat per F1 team

Wolff has another idea to have more cars available in F1. ''We can use a third car that can only be driven by a rookie. Then in one fell swoop, you have a starting grid with thirty cars.''

Although Wolff's idea sounds interesting, according to Jost Capito this is a huge investment for teams. Wolff's idea to have the young talents pay for it creates a new problem, because then you get mainly 'pay-drivers' in those seats, and not necessarily the greatest talents.
