Red Bull and McLaren against Wolff's plans: 'Then everyone gets less'

Earlier this week Toto Wolff came up with the idea to expand the teams from two to three cars to give more rookies a chance in Formula 1. However, the Mercedes team principal's idea has so far met with little support.

Eleventh or twelfth team in Formula 1

Williams team boss Jost Capito at Sport1.de sees mainly bears on the road when it comes to Wolff's plans. "Expanding a team from two to three cars is incredibly difficult, that's fifty percent more. I don't know how that can be done with 22, 23 races a year."

Of course, the cost per team would then skyrocket. Something that certainly not all teams on the grid can afford. McLaren boss Zak Brown does agree with Wolff that there should be more drivers on the grid but sees another way to do that. "I would like to see an eleventh or twelfth team," he said.

Less money for everyone

Christian Horner also sees little point in expanding to three cars per team but agrees with Brown's view. "I think there's probably one or two teams missing. There are a lot of young guys in Formula 2 who deserve a chance. But there are just not enough places available," the Red Bull team boss said.

"You wait for a Kimi [Raikkonen] to retire so there's a cockpit free somewhere. So I really think Formula 1 can accommodate one or two more teams." However, more teams also means that revenue has to be split between more parties. "If you cut more pieces out of a cake, everyone gets less," Horner says.
