Verstappen makes error at Monza: 'Max a driver who does not give space'

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have had an exciting weekend. A weekend in which the two candidates for the championship were once again part of a crash. This time it was Verstappen who got a three spot penalty for the next race. Rightly so, according to Christijan Albers.

In the new Formula 1 podcast, The Telegraph, Albers says that this time it was definitely the fault of the Dutchman. For him, there is no doubt about that and the situation needs to be looked at realistically.

"If you look realistically Max should not have been there at that moment. But that is Max Verstappen: he sees a hole. He has been created and raised that way from an early age. If you've followed Max's development a bit, then you also know that Verstappen is a driver who doesn't give the space that someone else needs."

FIA acted correctly

According to Albers, the penalty for Verstappen was, therefore, more than justified. If anyone was at fault, it was Verstappen.

"This time it was just Max's fault. And I think it says enough that the FIA gave that penalty. On the other hand: every incident is a racing incident. I can't imagine making a decision in a split second to deliberately drive someone off."

Either way: the result will stand. Hamilton and Verstappen left Sunday's Monza circuit without points as a result of this crash. Both drivers will be looking for sporting revenge in Russia. Verstappen now has a five-point lead in the world championship race thanks to his second place in the sprint race on Saturday.
