Recap: Will the Italian Grand Prix be as crazy as it was in 2020?

The third and final part of the triple header after the summer break is upon us, and involves a race at the Monza Autodrome in Italy. Looking at the crazy Grand Prix that took place here last year, excitement seems almost a certainty this year as well. Here is a brief overview of the Italian Grand Prix in 2020.

For Verstappen, the race in Italy was not the best. The driver was forced to abandon the car in the pit lane on lap 31 after a series of technical problems that plagued him from the start.

For the real excitement, we look at a Mercedes, a McLaren and an AlphaTauri, as crazy as this might sounds. A huge mistake on the part of Mercedes gave way to an unprecedented fight for victory between two unusual contenders who may both have deserved the win.

Lewis Hamilton drove in for new tyres during a safety car while the entrance to the pitlane was already closed. For this, he collected a 10 second stop & go penalty which catapulted him to the back of the entire grid.

After a heavy crash by Leclerc and a brief red flag period, Frenchman Pierre Gasly took over the lead in the race on his one-stop strategy. Just over a year after being suddenly relegated by Red Bull to its sister team the driver is keen to prove himself to the big bosses in Milton Keynes.

With twenty laps to go Carlos Sainz starts the hunt for Gasly from P2, his McLaren fitted with a set of fresher tyres. He only gets close enough to the Frenchman in the final laps, but then has no time left to start the overtaking manoeuvre. Gasly thus wins his first Formula 1 race in Italy, and has Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll alongside him on the podium.
