On Thursday afternoon, Johan Vollenbroek and his organisation Mobilisation for the Environment (MOB) filed a lawsuit in Haarlem against the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort from 3 to 5 September. The judge has ruled in the case and decided that the Dutch Grand Prix can go ahead.

Balancing of interests

Nothing seems to stand in the way of the Formula 1 circus. This was the last hurdle to overcome, but everyone with a racing heart can now breathe a sigh of relief.

The court indicated that it had made a balancing of interests: "MOB attaches importance to the nature interest and is committed to preventing ecological damage to the adjacent Natura 2000 area. Circuit Zandvoort, on the other hand, has now organised F1 almost entirely and has invested heavily in it. Not holding the F1 would immediately lead to very large losses and possible bankruptcy for Circuit Zandvoort."

Verdict

Luckily, the judge has with good news for F1-lovers in the Netherlands: "Now that the judgment on the lawfulness of the granted permit in the proceedings on the merits is still completely open, the Court in preliminary relief proceedings let the weighing of interests be in favour of Circuit Zandvoort. Therefore, the Court in preliminary relief proceedings does not see sufficient room for a full or partial suspension of the permit."
