The Belgian Grand Prix ended in a big disappointment for the teams and the fans. Only two single laps were driven, both behind the safety car. Because of that half points were handed out, but it couldn't be called a real race. Jan Lammers saw it happen and supports the decision of the FIA.

"It is the only decision they have taken, so it is always the right one. The wrong decision would be not to make any decision at all. Whatever they had done yesterday, it had been the right thing and you couldn't do anything wrong to anyone at all," he explains in conversation with GPblog.

Russell makes a big impression

"Obviously it does look like a farce, but I think it was a good procedure anyway. If you hadn't done that, Russell's fantastic performance would have just been undone. Now the guy is deservedly standing on the podium in secondplace". Russell surprised friend and foe on Saturday with his second place, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and behind Max Verstappen.

"That's what Williams deserves and that's what he deserves, it's just really clever. Lando Norrisalready showed that driving fast and staying on the asphalt is also an art". The McLaren Briton crashed out in the wet at Eau Rouge and had to start from fifteenth on the grid.

Half points deserved

Russell, on the other hand, kept him on track and excelled in the wet conditions. "Then when Russell shows that he can stand there with a car like that, I can really tell you that he had zero margin and really drove on the limit. In that respect I think it's really justice that the guy can just chalk up a second place."

Half points were handed out, however, because the drivers did not manage to complete the required 75 per cent of the race distance. "Well with half points, but in that context it is justified. Especially for Max, he deserved more, but at least now you can say it wasn't all for nothing," Lammers concluded.
