Criticism of Perez: 'He should have just put RB16B in reverse'

Christijan Albers believes Sergio Perez could have done more to get his RB16B to pit lane after his slide prior to the Belgian Grand Prix. The former Formula One driver believes Perez and Red Bull Racing gave up hope too soon of getting back to the garage on their own.

"The problem was that with understeer he went a bit too far. He picked it back up as it were and got grip again at the front, so he lost the rear and ended up in the tyre piles," Albers analysed in the podcast of De Telegraaf Perez's lap to the grid.

Perez has less talent

According to the 42-year-old Dutchman, the Mexican veteran is clearly not among the most talented drivers in the premier class of motorsport."There you see the difference between the top talents and the working talents who have been driving for a long time. Because Max and Lewis or whoever, or a Norris, real biters, they always come back to the pits. Whether it's on two or three wheels, they always come back," he says.

According to Albers, the only way Perez could not have come back is if his steering rod had broken off in the car. "But that seems unlikely to me because then the impact would have been very hard, but of course he can still just come back to the pits with his left front wheel. That's where you see the difference from a Max or Lewis who loses everything and still manages to drive back to the pits."

Quickly given up

The analyst is also critical of Red Bull who passed on to Perez relatively quickly that he could turn the engine off. "And secondly, you see someone who gives up quickly and gets out of the car. He should have just put it in reverse. Maybe he would have dug himself in, but he would have tried. The only thing I could be wrong about is if really the steering rod broke off in the car and he couldn't steer. I see no reason why that happened. I did think that was just really sloppy."
