Masi: "No ability to postpone the race to tomorrow"

On Saturday he made the decision not to red flag early, after which Lando Norris hit the wall hard. On Sunday he was more cautious, which resulted in two official race laps behind the safety car. According to some teams those laps should not have taken place at all, because it was only to get an official result. Michael Masi, however, sees things differently.

"It's been a long day. We've seen the worst weather conditions today. The conditions haven't been great all weekend, but we've had sections where we've been able to race. Today the weather got the better of us," the F1 race director explained to Sky Sports.

Safety first for the FIA

"From the perspective of F1 and the FIA, safety is the most important thing for the drivers, teams and spectators. We gave every option that was available within the regulations to give us the best opportunity to finish this race". As a result, they drove two laps behind the safety car before the race was called off.

"A number of teams saw the gap and soon after that, the bad weather passed again. There's no ability to postpone the race to tomorrow. We were in constant contact with our party that controls the weather forecasts. There seemed to be a gap that we could drive into and that gave us the opportunity to drive. In the end, we couldn't do a full race," Masi concludes.
